Afrikan/Latina Sorority Partners to Address Crisis in Somalia
MKU Hosts National Teleconference With MADRE
On Thursday August 25th, 2011 Malika Kambe Umfazi (MKU) Sorority, Inc. will host a free national teleconference with MADRE to address the current famine and extensive drought facing Somalia and other nations located in the horn of Africa. The event, "Sisters for Somalia" will be held at 7:00p.m. and will feature presenters from the sorority as well as MADRE, a New York-based international women's human rights organization working in the region. Community members who plan to attend the teleconference are required to pre-register for the event online via Eventbrite.com at
http://sis4somalia.eventbrite.com.
In late July of this year, The United Nations officially announced that as a result of the worst drought seen in East Africa in six decades and long standing civil conflict, Somalia's food supply is exhausted. 11 million people's lives are at risk of fatal hunger and thousands of Somalis have already died as a result of widespread malnutrition. According to Oxfam, a famine is officially declared "when malnutrition rates climb higher than 30 percent, when more than two people out of 10,000 die each day, and when food is limited to less than 2,100 calories a day per person."
According to program convener and active MKU member Anayah Sangodele-Ayoka, "The purpose of this national teleconference is to inform community members and other interested parties about the issues facing Somalia and East Africa right now and to inform them how they can contribute directly to MADRE's work on the continent." The 60 minute teleconference will include an interview style conversation with Diana Duarte and Natalia Caruso, MADRE's Communications Director and Program Director. The dialogue, facilitated by Dr. Takiyah Nur Amin, Immediate Past President of MKU, will focus on the scope of the current crisis, its impact on women and girls and US legislation impacting East Africa. Participants will be able to engage in a question and answer session on the call and will learn how their contributions can significantly impact the crisis in a positive way.
The call will be formally introduced by Mothyna James-Brightful, Immediate Past Vice President of MKU and Visionary Director of Heal A Woman to Heal a Nation, Inc. A follow-up to this initial program will be held in the coming months by the partner organizations to keep community members abreast of ongoing developments concerning this global crisis. In 2007, MKU Sorority, Inc. voted to support the work of MADRE as its third national philanthropy. Notably, MADRE has been lauded for its ongoing work over the last 28 years in addressing women’s human rights across the globe. MADRE is an international women’s human rights organization that works in partnership with community-based women's organizations worldwide to address issues of health and reproductive rights, economic development, education and other human rights.
